Guest Post- Author Skye Turner

Hey All,
I have Author Skye Turner doing a Guest Post today.

The Day I Finally “Felt” Like I Was an Author
By: Author Skye Turner

About seventeen months ago, I started on this journey called self-publishing. One day in the summer of 2013, while my husband was offshore and my kids were running around my house like crazy little people, I sat at my laptop and decided to get the ideas that were living in my head… out.

I wrote like a person possessed that day. I think I wrote something like nine thousand words. It was like now that I was finally allowing the voices in my head to talk, they had so much to say.
My first book was written in ten days. I worked literally twenty to twenty-two hours a day. I didn’t sleep, I think I might have showered a time or two, but ten days later… I was done. My first book, Alluring Turmoil, the beginning of Bayou Stix, was written.

That was step one. I used to think that people wrote books and then people read them. I was so green. I literally had no idea what I was getting into, but I decided that if I was going to do it, I was going to do it like everything else in my life and do it big.

I researched cover designers and editors (though I was an editor). I thought I was going to format the book myself, but after countless YouTube videos, tears, and almost throwing my laptop across the room, I asked some friends for someone to rescue me from formatting hell, and got the name of my formatter.

I worked on Alluring Turmoil for months… writing, revising, editing, revising again, allowing betas to read it, talking to my cover designer, working with my editor, then formatting…

I reached out to so many people that I’d followed and admired and I promoted myself and my work. I did all of this for MONTHS before I ever published.

Then, it was time… time to push the button and release my book into the world. Feedback had been pretty good from people who’d received ARC’s. Certain blogs told me I stunk and that I shouldn’t release and they were sorry, but they couldn’t recommend the book. That stung, but I pushed on. I submitted the book to be published… and then I waited. I was a nervous wreck and I had this extreme urge to vomit or curl up into the fetal position in the corner, but I did it…

Alluring Turmoil went “Live” on September 11, 2013 (two days before it was supposed to). I didn’t know anything, but I started checking the sales numbers… holy smoke… people were buying my book. I think I did vomit at one point from the nerves and stress.

By September 12, 2013 I was receiving feedback… people for the most part LIKED my book… I couldn’t help but think this was some sort of cosmic joke. I mean people I’d once looked up to and read everything they produced, were now reading MY work. WHAT?! This was crazy. I’m just a wife and mommy with a dream from Smalltown, Louisiana. I was a tiny blip in the big world of authors.

The messages and reviews started coming in and while most were good, there were some bad, those hurt at first… as time went on, I realized… wow, I need to write another book.

So, I did. And then I write four more. The conclusion to the Bayou Stix series comes out this Friday, November 21. But the truth is… now seventeen months into this, I think I finally feel like an author.

I wake up every day and think to myself… I write books. I entertain people. I involve people in my stories. People travel to events to meet me and express their joy from my work. I receive messages from all over the world and every single day, I pinch myself and grin.

That is surreal. I’ve written six books in seventeen months. I generally produce new material every ninety days… but until recently I’ve never thought of myself as an author…

I do now and trust me… it’s the best feeling.

TNEE 2014 Atlanta

Hey all, So I spent this past weekend in Atlanta at The Novel Experience Event. Jane Smolen and I went together again. It was only 6 hours from my house so not to bad of a drive. I have to say holy Authors Batman, there were so many wonderful authors everything from YA, Paranormal, Contemporary, Science fiction, Alternate history, Erotic, Military, BDSM, Historical, Contemporary, and even sweet romance. There was something for everyone... I was so excited to meet J.M Madden whose street team I am on, she was so awesome.

One of the first author/reader events that took place was when you where able to go to the Aquarium with Authors. I went with J.M Madden, Sharon Hamilton and Ikelia Francis(Awesome Blogger). I truly enjoyed that experience. They had touch pools where you could touch the sea life. Here is a picture of J. M Madden experiencing the touch pool.

We even found Ocean Porn, and when we left the Atlanta was lit up and it was awesome.

I went to VIP party enjoyed talking with other readers, bloggers and the authors that where there... I also got a tattoo during the VIP party. The Tattoo Artists that where there did top notch work and where awesome. Here is a picture of my tattoo.. I absolutely love it.

On Saturday they had the book signing and the themed parties...The book signing was massive... I tried to spend time with each author and I made a point to visit every single one... I won't lie it took hours. But I enjoyed it even though my feet didn't lol... I wore boots bad mistake. Nothing is more rewarding then meeting authors you love and new authors you didn't even know existed. I ended up with some pretty awesome books, not counting the ebooks I ended up buying.

There where three parties the Book Boyfriend, The Cowboy, and BDSM party. I went to each of them and they all different which was a good thing in my mind as it made it easy for those who don't like something to have other choices. I spent most of my time between the BDSM and Cowboy party as they where right next to each other. It was a long day but I have to say I had a great time, indulged in too many books, too many sweets, and just enough drinks.

Next year The Novel Experience is going to be in Las Vegas and I have never been there so I am looking to going. For a first year event I have to say it was pretty damn good, only suggestion I would make would be to have name tags as I am bad with names sometimes.

Overall Great Event I suggest everyone should go to at least one reader event and this would be a great event for someone who is going for the first time.

I have tons of swag and will be giving away 3 TNEE tote bags full of goodies this month so make sure you enter either though one of the 2 hops, or my monthly contest which starts today. Here is a picture of all the swag

Lora Leighs RAW

So this past weekend I went to Lora Leigh's Readers Appreciation Weekend (RAW) for the very first time and I had the best time imaginable.

Just to let you know authors who were there so totally awesome and very nice. It was like heaven with all the naughty books you could ever read written by the following kick ass authors.

Lora Leigh, C H. Admirand, Dana Marie Bell, Shayla Black, Monica Burns, Mari Carr, Veronica Chadwick, Bianca D'Arc, Sylvia Day, Jacquelyn Frank, Darynda Jones, Stephanie Julian, Sahara Kelly, Angela Knight, Isabella LaPearl, Gennita Low, Amanda McIntyre, Marla Monroe, Sophie Oak/Lexi Blake, Ranae Rose, Carrie Ann Ryan, Jayne Rylon, Beth Williamson and Mary Wine.

I was sad that Yasmine Galehorn couldn't make it but hopefully I will meet her another time.

So just to start you off I started my RAW weekend by picking up my new friend Jane Smolen in Greensboro and she road tripped with me up to Hagerstown Maryland with the help of Mr Garmin. We talked and laughed our butts off the whole 4.5 hours that's right 4.5 hours because I got there hour earlier than we thought we would get there because well... I drive a little fast.

We ended up getting connecting rooms and there was an open door policy and we started by putting our stuffs in our room and checking into RAW. After getting our swag bags, name tags and t-shirts. We went to get our memory book signed and talk with our favorite authors. Jane was super excited to finally meet Mari Carr and Jane Rylon. I was happy to see Ranae Rose and Carrie Ann Ryan again and meet others for the first time. This was a great intro for the start of the weekend. Dinner was our our own so we hit up the hotel resturant which was pretty darn good.

I saw a couple people I had met at the Fredrick Book Festival and met some new friends. Then we were introduced to the authors though a princess party. I know that wasn't what it was called but we got crowns and wands. And I got to Meet Sylvia Day and Gennita Low for the first time. I love their books and they both are super nice.

We then called it a night. Friday started off with meeting the authors again and the heading to some Red Hot Pictionary which was pretty damn funny I don't think I laughed that hard in a long time. We had to draw dirty words wanna see what I had to draw????
I can't draw stick figures so yeah... lol... But the funniest part of this was that the person who go the answer correct had to read excerpt from book that has the word in it. Yeah this was funny as the authors started acting out the scenes. Poor Carrie Ann got spanked. where was tons of panels to keep you busy and allowed you to interact with the authors. I enjoyed the author round tables which was kind of like speed dating but with authors. After Dinner it was time to get ready for the 80's party I have to say the  Friday Night's 80's Party was pretty awesome. Here is some pictures from that.
Melinda, Kim, Me and Nikkie
 Jane and Mari
The Little Mermaid group awesome costumes
I also enjoyed the author round tables it was like speed dating but with Authors and was nice to get inside scoops and find out when they started writing and all the good things you want to know about authors.

Saturday was just as busy as Friday but there was the Cowboy Stampede and what a Stampede it was with line dancing, free swag and books and cowboy themed giveaways. Then followed by another round table/author speed dating. It was officially called Falling Leaves and Changing Authors. Then panel with Lora Leigh, Jaquelyn Frank and Sylvia . Last dinner and then the Slumber Party in your PJ's which was fun.

Over all I love RAW and Will be going back next year... All I can say is I plan on going day early to sight see because I did miss out on the earlier activities on Thursday as we arrived around 1:30 in the afternoon.

I ended up with tons of books and swag and here are the books i bought, won and received for free at RAW.

Review Glisten by Patrice Lyle

Description

The death of Western medicine. The death of a federal agent. And the death of sisterly love.

An explosive new law bans Western medicine and forces Americans to adopt naturopathic medicine as the only legal form of health care. Glisten is the biggest health revolution America has ever seen and sparks controversy that touches many lives... including twin sisters Isabelle and Charelle Adler, who haven't seen each other since they were teenagers. Now Isabelle is a Health Enforcement Agent for the U.S. Department of Glisten and Charelle is deeply entrenched in the Resistance. Add in Isabelle's murdered fiancĂ© and Dr. Jade, a naturopathic doctor who orchestrates a risky maneuver to save her marriage, and Glisten is a fast-paced story about holistic medicine, family secrets, and dangerous choices.

My Review

I found the thought of this book extremely interesting and I wasn't mistaken. My gut told me this was going to be a good but I was surprised on how much I truly liked it and was enlightened, by all the healthy living and holistic medical  information that Patrice Lyle incorporates into her book. She has taken a Traditional Medical Suspense Novel and put her own spin on it birthing a Holistic Medical Suspense novel where traditional medicine is outlawed, Twin Sisters are on different sides of a war where there is danger, death, heartbreak, family secrets and never a dull moment.

I really enjoyed how the story line was intertwined and you could go from the Glisten side to the Resistance side and feel like they were connected. This book shows the different sides of medicine and alternative options in a world that is consumed with pills vs natural remedies are sometimes it takes a brave person to say no more and find something better the body and soul.

The story line with the secondary characters is equally entertaining and suspenseful Dr. Jade has her own issues in this book so it isn't just about Charelle and Isabelle. This was a book i had trouble putting down and I seriously hope that there is a second book. As Patrice Lyle leaves you wanting more, I hate cliff hangers(I hate waiting for the next book) but i am hoping there is a Glisten 2 to find out what happens next.

*I met Patrice Lyle at the Fredrick Book Festival, she was very engaging and I had a wonderful conversation with her about Holistic medicine and natural living.

I rate this book a 4 out of 5

*I was given this book by the author in return for my honest review

You can buy Glisten on Amazon

An Adventure at the Fredrick Book Festival

So I did my first out of state Book Festival... I went to the Fredrick Book Festival in Fredrick, Maryland it was the first year for it. So here is how my day went

I woke up super early and left the house at 2:15 am cause i was worried about traffic and didn't really know where I was going... I live in Fayetteville, NC so my trusty Goggle Maps said 5 hours and 50 minute drive. I stopped for coffee around 5... There was some Mocha Energy Cappuccino Coffee... Didn't know if it truly gave me Energy but It tasted Awesome for Gas Station Coffee lol.

I didn't have any problems till I was just about to Fredrick, Maryland I had a map and my GPS(do not count on GPS as it had me do a U-turn when there was nowhere do do a U-turn) but the phone gremlins finally agreed to let me find my destination after we too a detour in the hills. I saw this stop in this Scenic Stop...

I am a history Buff and I was not and I quote "Allowed to stop at the Marine Corps Museum without Mike" Mike is hubby for those who don't know. I drove past it twice. It was hard not to stop as it is one of the places we want to go to.

I finally got to the Fredrick Book Festival about 8:45am it started at 9 am... I am one of those who like to be  on time if possible as in my mind it gives me more time to talk to everyone. The day started out with promise, then it got a little chilly... Wasn't prepared for the Maryland weather as I had 90 degree weather in NC the day before.
I stopped at each persons table and chatted it up. I of course started with Ranae Rose and Carrie Ann Ryan as I had gifts for them. It was so awesome to meet them and they were super nice and down to earth. They shared a table with Gabrielle Bisset who was very engaging and I was in total awe. Here is a picture of their totally awesome set up.
I also chatted with Avery Flynn and Elisabeth Staab, they both funny and wonderful ladies. Here is a picture of Me, Avery & Elisabeth

Those are the only pictures i have from the Festival as I was so busy talking with all the wonderful authors and of course I was so excited to meet Joy of Joyfully Reviewed... Confused me at first cause she was missing her bunny ears... But chatted with her later Bunny Ears in all.

I came away with a bunch of books and a bunch of Swag... Some for my monthly giveaways(That's for you followers), some for review, some from just me... Over all it was a great day... Even though i had a 6 hour rainy drive back home... Hubby let me sleep pretty much all day... I am not feeling to good woke up stuffed up, coughing, and having a fever. Anyhow here is a picture of the books and Swag.
Paper Back Books By Elisabeth Staab, Patrice Lyle, Gabrielle Bisset, Carrie Ann Ryan, Antho, PJ Schyder, Rob Gutro, Ranae Rose, & Eliza Knight. I also got a bought a bunch of ebooks:)
This was the first year for the Fredrick Book Festival... I know I plan on going next year.

Much Love Jeannie
